Located in Wenjiang, on the outskirts of Chengdu, the Chengyuan Calligraphy Art Museum offers an interesting perspective on contemporary architecture. During my visit, I was drawn to its minimalist interior, where geometric shapes, clean lines and subtle contrasts create a striking visual environment.
Through my photographs, I wanted to explore the architectural details of the building rather than its artistic collections. The interior spaces reveal a fascinating interplay of light, shadow and geometry. Staircases, angular walls and large openings in the ceiling create compositions that change depending on the viewing angle.
I chose to photograph the museum in black and white to emphasize its architectural structure. Without the distraction of color, the eye naturally focuses on the shapes, textures and contrasts between the bright white surfaces and the dark elements of the building. The resulting images have an almost abstract quality, transforming ordinary architectural features into graphic compositions.
The staircases were particularly inspiring. Their strong lines and unusual perspectives create a sense of depth and symmetry, while the surrounding walls and ceiling contribute to a minimalist atmosphere. I enjoyed experimenting with low-angle views and carefully balanced compositions to highlight the museum’s distinctive design.
For me, architectural photography is not only about documenting buildings. It is also about discovering visual patterns, exploring perspectives and finding beauty in the relationship between space and light.
The Chengyuan Calligraphy Art Museum provided a perfect setting for this approach, offering a quiet and visually engaging experience away from the busy streets of Chengdu.
