My friend invited me to take photos with a young Chinese woman in a transformed studio apartment in downtown Chengdu, creating a series of vintage-style portraits that captured the essence of the 1970s and 1980s in China. The studio apartment was transformed into a vintage-style set, complete with a lot of retro furniture and accessories that created an authentic and nostalgic atmosphere. The model was styled to match the era, with her hair, makeup and clothes carefully crafted to recreate the iconic looks of the time. The result was a combination of vintage style and modern photography techniques. To achieve the desired vintage look, I used a combination of techniques both during the photoshoot and in post-processing. I used natural light from the apartment’s windows to create a soft, dreamy atmosphere, while also using artificial lighting, a neon portable light tube, to highlight specific features and create depth. In post-processing, I used color grading to create a warm, retro color palette. The young woman’s delicate features and timeless beauty are perfectly suited to the vintage style, and the expert styling and lighting give the portraits an authentic, classic feel. In addition to their visual appeal, these portraits also have a cultural significance. The 1970s and 1980s were a time of great change and growth in China, with the country opening up to the world and embracing new ideas and influences. The vintage style of these portraits pays homage to this era, capturing the style and aesthetics that were prevalent at the time.
