Recently, I had the opportunity to capture portraits of a young Chinese woman model in a tearoom in Taikooli, Chengdu. The setting was intimate and cozy, with dim lighting that created a moody atmosphere. Sitting on a couch, she was surrounded by the warm glow of the tea room, and I knew that I wanted to capture this moment in a unique and captivating way. To achieve this, I decided to use a small torch light with a glass of water as a light modifier to highlight specific parts of her face. The result was stunning. The soft light from the torch gave to the photos a dreamy and romantic feel. At the same time, the darkened background created a sense of mystery and intrigue. As a photographer, I am always striving to achieve the perfect balance between light and shadow, and in these photos I was able to create a sense of depth and dimensionality. The use of a diffused light source allowed me to control the direction and quality of light, creating a soft and cinematic look. In post-processing, the color choices that were made added an extra layer of visual interest to these portraits. By selecting cool, moody hues, a cinematic look was achieved, trying to make the photos appear as if they were plucked from a scene in a film. The use of dark greens in the background creates a sense of depth and adds to the overall moodiness of the images, while the warm skin tones of the subject stand out and draw the viewer’s eye.
