It’s the third time I shoot the Chengdu marathon 2023. Early morning photography at a marathon presents its own set of challenges. The light is soft, and the athletes are in motion. It’s a test of your skills and equipment. As the race kicked off at 7:30 AM, I was initially met with dim light and fast-moving subjects. But I knew that as the sun rose higher, the real magic would unfold.
As the golden rays of the sun gradually bathed the runners and the course, the atmosphere transformed. This was the moment I had been waiting for. The soft morning light worked its magic, creating a perfect balance of contrast and clarity. It was the ideal lighting conditions to capture the athletes in their full determination and dedication.
One of the remarkable things about photographing marathons is how much the participants enjoy being in the spotlight. Runners, determined to reach the finish line, often beam with enthusiasm when they spot a camera. It’s as if the camera’s presence ignites an extra burst of energy, making for some of the most candid and authentic shots.
